Chinatown Public Domain Plan

The Chinatown Public Domain Plan provides urban design concepts for improving the quality and provision of public spaces throughout Sydney’s Chinatown precinct. Opportunities for ‘winning back’ public spaces have been identified through targeted road closures, footpath widening, and developing potential shared zones. Our recommendations are presented as a series of public domain upgrade projects, which will form the basis of future design briefs to be implemented over short, medium, and long term.

This project’s main achievement is its articulation of a clear vision for Chinatown’s future, delivered through a series of realisable projects that will, over time, radically transform Chinatown’s public domain.  The completion of this vision will see a massive 44% gain in pedestrian-focussed public space, and a fundamental reconfiguration of the public domain to provide a diverse, integrated and interconnected network of public spaces throughout Chinatown.

Key to the success of this project was our successful program of engagement with the Chinatown business community, residents, local visitors and tourists, which resulted in widespread support for the final public domain plan.
