In a highly competitive field, SMM are thrilled to have been awarded First Prize in the two-staged open design competition for the design of the chancellery and residence for the German Embassy in Canberra. SMM are part of the winning team led by Berlin-based architects Richter Musikowski in collaboration with Lahznimmo Architects, ADP Consulting and Daniel Butterick Consulting.

SMM’s landscape design draws on the “genius loci” of place, adopting species of the Monaro Grasslands, such as snow gum eucalyptus trees, as well as native grasses and wildflowers and transforms the site into a new, drought-resistant garden that requires minimal maintenance and irrigation. The landscape is intended to serve as “a metaphor for the relationship between Germany and Australia, and the aspirations of both countries for equality and openness, democracy and inclusion.” SMM will commence work on the next phase shortly.
