Through the Equitable Resilience Program with EPA, SMM is working with 15 communities across the south and southwest. Chickasaw Creek flows through Prichard, Alabama on its way to the Mobile River. Prichard’s location in Mobile County is at the intersection of several ecoregions – the Southern Pine Plains and Hills, Gulf Coast Flatwoods, and Floodplains and Low Terraces – and makes it one of the richest areas of biodiversity in the state of Alabama. Mobile County has one of the highest annual rainfall in the nation, averaging almost 66 inches and Mobile Bay drains three-quarters of Alabama as well as parts of Mississippi, Georgia and Tennessee. Mobile has also seen 5.9 inches of sea level rise since 2010.

Despite its rich ecological potential, Prichard currently faces significant environmental challenges, including frequent flooding, urban heat island effects, and poor air and water quality. The city's disadvantaged communities are disproportionately affected by these issues. Recognizing these challenges, Mobile Baykeeper and We Matter Community Association (WMCA), a Black-led organization established in 2016 to address environmental injustices in Mobile County, have partnered to develop a project along the banks of Chickasaw Creek that addresses the environmental needs of Prichard focusing on three key objectives: 1) creating a new park that will provide climate resilience benefits, including protection from urban heat and flooding, 2) providing social and economic benefits to the community, which suffers from poverty and a lack of passive recreational opportunities, and 3) improving water quality, air quality, and wildlife habitat by leveraging the site's unique ecological attributes.

“I've gotten more focused on trying to help our community be able to not only survive but thrive through different natural disasters. I think it's about preparedness. I've really educated myself better on how to prepare myself and our community for these types of disasters, which I think is paramount.”

Carletta Davis, President, We Matter Community Association

Champion's Park, a 34-acre community park space adjacent to Chickasaw Creek and Highway 158, is intended to be a catalytic project for a larger environmental protection vision and will provide necessary access to quality parks and recreational opportunities in a city with only three small municipal parks. By protecting this land from future development and preserving the floodplain to perpetuity, the park prevents potential future land use that would exacerbate flooding through increased impervious surfaces and additional run-off from buildings. Champion’s Park will be a launch point for the Africatown Connections Blueway.
