SMM played a key role in transforming Detroit's Fitzgerald neighborhood through their work on the Fitzgerald Neighborhood Revitalization Plan completed in 2017. Significantly, three projects from this plan have now been completed—Livernois Avenue Streetscape (2020), the McNichols corridor revitalization (2021), and Ella Fitzgerald Park and Greenway (2018)—funded in part by the Reimagining the Civic Commons initiative. A recent survey of residents found that these projects significantly improved community well-being by enhancing trust among residents, strengthening social connections, and fostering a sense of optimism about the neighborhood's future. The development of these civic spaces demonstrated the power of thoughtful design in creating positive change within communities.
